Library Services Available at Alert Level 2 for All Staff and Students Residing in New Zealand

We’re pleased to be able to welcome Massey staff and students back into our Library buildings under Alert Level 2. Here’s what we can offer you.

Campus Libraries are Open

All campus library buildings are now open to staff and students between 8:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m. Monday - Friday; 10:00 a.m. - 8:00 p.m. Saturday - Sunday.

We're Committed to Keeping You Safe

We’ll be staying on top of the following to keep you safe:

  • Spaced furniture to comply with distancing requirements
  • Regular cleaning of surfaces and facilities
  • Widely-available hand sanitiser
  • Limited study spaces and no group study spaces
  • Sorry, no cash transactions
  • Careful access to and safe handling of books

Ready Access to Books for All Staff and Students

  • Our extensive ebook collection is available through Discover
  • We recommend that you use ebooks in preference to print books if possible
  • You can request print books using the Discover Request This button, and either pick them up at your campus library or have them delivered to you by courier
  • You can return your print books in person or via free return courier service

Getting Help from Library Staff

  • We’re available to answer your queries by email and phone.
  • If you’re in the Library building during opening hours, and you have an essential and urgent question that can’t be answered by phone or email, please indicate using the bell at the Service Point and we’ll give you a hand if we can do so safely.

Distance Library Service Book Courier Service

Under Alert Level 2 the Library is extending the Distance Library Service book courier service to all staff and students residing in New Zealand.

This means that you can request:

  • print books that are borrowable to be couriered to your postal address OR
  • print material to be scanned and emailed to you

Please note that this service does not apply to books in the Recreational Reading collection at the Manawatū Library.

Where will we send the books?

Students:

  • We will send books to the postal address that Massey has for you. You can log in to MyLibrary to check the address we will use.
  • If your address has changed, use the Update Student Contact Details link in MyLibrary to update your address.
  • An Address Redirection with NZPost does not apply to CourierPost parcels.

Staff:

  • We will not have your postal address for book delivery, so please fill out the following form to give us your address.
  • You only need to fill the form out the first time that you make a request.
  • An Address Redirection with NZPost does not apply to CourierPost parcels.

More Details About the Extended Distance Library Service

  • Books: We will deliver books to your postal address. We pay the return postage (within New Zealand) for the books we send out.
    • Submit your request using the Request button in Discover - choose Courier Delivery (NZ only) from the Pickup Location drop-down menu in the Request Verification screen.
      Note: Students are expected to purchase compulsory textbooks. The Library purchases limited copies of compulsory textbooks and cannot guarantee that a copy will be available to borrow.
  • Articles: We will send you electronic copies of articles held in print only.

  • Copying: We will send you electronic copies of chapters of books that are not available for loan. Note: The Library must comply with The Copyright Act (1994) which restricts the amount that can be copied to a "reasonable proportion".

Returning Books: Handy Hints

  • Keep track of what books you have out and when they are due back to avoid overdue fines and penalties.
  • The due date is when the item must be back at the Library, not when it should be posted.
    NOTE: You would normally allow 3-4 working days for return postage; we recommend that you allow slightly longer as courier services can experience delays under Alert Level 2.
  • Log in to your MyLibrary account to check due dates and renew books.

  • We send your requests out via CourierPost. Delivery is overnight to most cities, sometimes longer if you live in a Rural Delivery (RD) area. You will need to ensure the courier driver has access to a safe place to leave your books. NOTE: Courier services may take slightly longer under Alert Level 2.
  • If you are having difficulty or issues with delivery/return of materials at any time, please contact us as soon as possible.
  • Returning books:
    • Recycle the CourierPost bag by turning it inside out (so it is "grey" on the outside) as this will save you time and money.
    • If you choose to use your own packaging, make sure the packaging is robust, and do not use staples to secure your parcel.
    • Use the Freepost label supplied or you can print more using this template:

    • Attach the label securely, take the parcel to a Post Shop and it will come back to us at no cost to you.
    • Alternatively, you can return your books in person to any Massey University campus library by their due date.
    • Please do not include any correspondence or payments with the books, as these are processed by another section in the Library.

Online Services

The following online Library services and resources are available to Massey staff and students:

  • The Library has access to a huge number of electronic journal articles, and these are all still available
  • The Library also has access to a huge number of ebooks, and we are buying extra copies over this period – please make use of these too
  • Some publishers have made extra online content available at no charge as part of their response to the COVID-19 outbreak

You can still renew your books by logging in to your MyLibrary account.

We will be waiving all fines over this period.
