The Graduate Certificate in Science and Technology allows you to update your knowledge and skills in an area similar to that in which you graduated (or work in).
The Graduate Certificate in Science and Technology enables graduates to study another subject area without completing a second bachelor’s degree. The Graduate Certificate is a bridging tool for graduates to gain knowledge in a specific area of sciences, so they can go on to postgraduate study.
So it is used primarily as a ‘pathway’ to help you complete subjects you need to enter a postgraduate qualification.
The GCertScTech gives you a relatively quick stepping stone to postgraduate study if you do not have the necessary pre-requisites.
You can complete this certificate in one semester of full-time study or a longer period of part-time study.
If you have substantial industry experience at a senior level this will be considered towards your application. This is on a case-by-case basis.
Some of the courses in the Graduate Certificate in Science and Technology can be studied by distance (online), giving you the flexibility to work study around jobs and other commitments.
You may have courses passed under the Graduate Certificate programme credited to a bachelor’s degree, provided the courses comply with the regulations of the degree in question.
If you are unsure about your background, or you do not have the required prerequisites to start the Graduate Certificate, the Certificate of Science and Technology programme includes these and we recommend you investigate studying that qualification first.
“I found this programme challenging, but fun at the same time. We had an awesome lecturer which made the experience unforgettable…”
"For those of you with an interest in lighting and lighting design, this is definitely the choice for you!
My interest in lighting stemmed from when I was working as a lighting sales rep. I spoke with people at the counter and became interested in how lighting made them feel and how it can affect a room’s mood. I knew I wanted to advance my lighting career and to enhance my technical knowledge.
After doing some research I believed Massey’s Graduate Certificate in Science and Technology (Lighting) at Massey University was the right choice. I believe if you really want to be successful in the lighting field it’s essential to learn the technical and design skills you will gain through this course.
I was awarded the top prize in the student achievement lighting design competition run by the New Zealand illumination Engineering Society.
I enjoyed my time at Massey. I travelled from Wellington to Auckland to study at the Albany Campus six times a year with students from all over New Zealand. The staff and facilities were great and I made some good friends along the way. I hope to be back in the future.
I am now using my abilities in lighting design working for Rexel Lighting in a Lighting Specification, Sales and Design position covering the lower North Island."
Lighting is unique specialisation you can focus on for your GCertScTech. The courses in this speciality are designed to provide formal education to professionals in lighting and related industries.
You will undertake general study in the art, science and engineering of lighting, including photometry, vision and measurement, and lighting design (interior and exterior) with an emphasis on sustainability and energy saving. Successful completion of the qualification will provide the academic requirements for membership of the IESA.
You may enter with a bachelor’s degree and in some instances industry experience. See the ‘Planning’ area of this page for more information.
