Palmy Plastic Pollution Challenge

The Palmy Plastic Pollution Challenge (PPPC) aims to provide a benchmark of the forms (macro and micro), locations, agencies and impacts of plastic pollution degrading the mauri of the Manawatū river. The initial benchmarking covers:

• the city’s stream catchment
• the storm water system at points of ingress and discharge
• fly tipping, road side litter and street sweeping systems
• waste water treatment and bio-solids contamination.

This baseline data will inform the development of a community based plastic pollution strategy for Palmerston North City.

This project is a collaboration between:

• Massey staff and students
• Palmerston North City Council
• Horizons Regional Council
• Environment Network Manawatū
• Landcare Trust
• Enviroschools
• ANZ
• Fish and Game
• Rangitane O Manawatū

Two student interns from collaborating Brazilian Universities involved in ‘Nexus for International Zero Waste Academic Collaboration’ (NIZAC) are also contributing to the project.
