Pre-departure checklist

Once you have received your Offer of Place, there are still a number of things you need to do to. Below is a checklist of tasks you need to complete before you leave for New Zealand.


  • Provide any final outstanding documents to Massey University
  • Pay your tuition fees due
  • Ensure that you hold a valid passport and apply to Immigration New Zealand for a student visa. Full details of visa requirements and advice about working in New Zealand while studying, are available on Immigration New Zealand's Website. You need to present your student visa to the International Student Support Team when you arrive at Massey University
  • Finalise your accommodation, Student Accommodation at Massey is a good place to start. Complete the online accommodation application form (if you are intending to live in university-managed accommodation) and pay the deposit to secure a room on campus. Alternatively homestay accommodation is also available, and you can find more information about this on Massey University's website
  • Apply for a Student ID Card
  • Book your return airfare to New Zealand and onward flight to Palmerston North or Wellington if studying at these campuses. Check the weight allowance for checked-in luggage with your airline/s of travel. Notify the International Student Support Office of your travel arrangements
  • Submit an Arrival Collection Form to the campus support staff if you are living in Massey University campus accommodation so that you can be met at the airport, bus or train station on arrival Albany | Manawatu | Wellington
  • Arrange and pay for Medical and Travel Insurance that complies with Massey University International Students' requirements. Remember to declare any pre-existing medical conditions as part of your application
  • Attendance at Orientation is compulsory for all international students (starting on the Commencement Date notified in your Offer). The International Student Support Office at your intended Massey campus will contact you about Orientation close to the Orientation date
  • Complete the enrolment form for your registration into your programme of study and individual courses (classes)
  • Bring approximately NZ$500 in cash with you for your initial expenses. It would also be useful to have access to a credit card when in New Zealand
  • Arrange to have sufficient funds for your living expenses for the duration of your studies at Massey University
  • Take copies of your passport, air tickets, credit cards and other important documents. You may life to leave a copy with your parents or email yourself copies of the documents should you lose them at a later date
  • It is recommended that you have a dental check-up, have your eyes tested and are up to date with your immunisations before you leave your home country
  • Get to know New Zealand before you arrive - Immigration New Zealand has a great NZReady online tool to help you move and settle in (

Items you should have in your hand luggage

  • Your plane ticket
  • Valid passport with a Student Visa to study at Massey University in New Zealand
  • Copies of all the communications you have had with Massey University (Receipt of Payment letter, Offer of Place letter, copies of accommodation application and Arrival form)
  • At least $500 in cash in New Zealand currency
  • Copy of your Insurance documents
  • Contact details for the International Staff at your campus - Albany | Manawatu | Wellington
  • Sufficient winter or summer clothes. If you have a national outfit you may wish to bring it with you
  • Laptop/tablet and mobile phone
  • Electrical plug or adaptor for New Zealand
  • Medication - if you take prescribed medication you need to check whether you can bring it to New Zealand. You may need a prescription or letter from your doctor (in English) advising that the drugs have been prescribed for you
