Located on Keiller Place, a sunny ridge above the Turitea campus, the Atawhai Family Units are part of a peaceful residential area, with a supportive village-like atmosphere. There are 9 two-bedroom units primarily for students who have a family (1 or 2 dependent children living with them). Usually a few units are also available for mature students who have a partner or spouse but no children.
The Atawhai Family Units are a 10-20 minute walk from all the resources of the main campus, bus stop and childcare centre. The walking track up to Atawhai passes through an area of trees, and ascends 150 steps up a well formed and well lit path. This makes access difficult for a baby stroller and tiring for young children. Most families find it necessary to have a car if they are living in the family units. A car is helpful for accessing shops, schools, English classes, and work. Sometimes the non-studying partner or spouse can feel isolated during the day because Atawhai is away from the main city, shops and library. However other partners appreciate that the student may be able to return home for lunch or as needed. The route from campus to Atawhai is safe as New Zealand does not have snakes, or any other dangerous wild animals.
