Massey University’s animal, agricultural and veterinary science professionals are among the best in the world and they will teach you about the latest developments in animal science. You will obtain expertise in genetics and breeding, nutrition and growth, and animal welfare. The Bachelor of Animal Science degree also offers a speciality in equine.
The BAnSc has a distinct New Zealand flavour and is equivalent to international animal science programmes. This allows you to study part of your programme overseas.
Massey has a number of internationally recognised animal-based research centres including: AL Rae Genetics Centre, Animal Welfare Science and Bioethics Centre, Centre for Feline Nutrition, Equine Parentage Genetic Services Centre, Equine Research Centre, International Sheep Research Centre, Monogastric Research Centre and the Working Dog Centre. These centres are used to enhance the learning experience throughout the degree.

Practical components of the programme are taught on site at our sheep, beef and dairy farms and at our feline and canine facilities and state of the art teaching laboratories.
A 2017 Ministry of Education publication The post-study earnings and destinations of young domestic graduates showed that those who complete a qualification in a science, agriculture, technology, computer science, engineering or mathematics field of study have high relative earnings after they complete their study compared to the national median. Earnings can be substantially more than other graduates.
Minors are not available in the Bachelor of Animal Science.

I really love working with dogs, and I always wanted to work with them in some capacity. When I was younger I dreamed of roaming the streets with a German shepherd or inspecting contraband in an airport with a beagle. I thought a good stepping stone would be to complete an animal science degree at Massey. But as I completed more courses and practical work I realised I wanted to enter the farming industry, but farm with a difference.
After finishing at Massey, I got a job as a genetics intern at Mount Linton, a 13,000-plus hectare station, one of the largest privately-owned properties in New Zealand. A few months later, I landed my dream role, becoming the Sheep Genetics Manager.
I’m in charge of breeding and selecting within the two stud sheep flocks. These flocks are the superior animals to the other station sheep, the ram progeny produced by these ewes are sold to other farmers throughout New Zealand and used at mating for the rest of the stations 40,000 ewes. I’m also able to keep my passion for training dogs alive as I look after sheep dogs, so really, I’m getting the best of both worlds. Out in the field, a good career and doing what I love. I’m not ready for a desk job just yet.
The Bachelor of Animal Science will provide you the knowledge, attributes and expertise you require for the careers of the future. You will be qualified for technical, advocacy and management roles across the production animal, equine and companion animal science industries.
