The College of Health hosts several research centres, all focused on improving the health of individuals and communities.

Centre for Ergonomics, Occupational Safety and Health

The Centre for Ergonomics, Occupational Safety and Health focuses on the workplace and the worker. Current research programmes are: small business and occupational safety and health, musculoskeletal discomfort, noise management and noise induced hearing loss, mild hypoxia and hypohydration in aircrew, and the role of occupational safety and health practitioners.

Centre for Metabolic Health Research

The mission of the Centre for Metabolic Health Research is to facilitate high-calibre interdisciplinary research in metabolic health. Our cross-disciplinary centre combines expertise in sport and exercise, nutrition and dietetics, physiology, food technology, environmental health and Māori health.

Centre for Postharvest and Refrigeration Research

The Centre for Postharvest and Refrigeration Research investigates efficient management of storing, transporting and marketing perishable goods. It is involved in postharvest and refrigeration research, teaching and extension; provides scientific outputs to sponsors, and exposes students to world-class research activity and philosophy.

Centre for Public Health Research

The Centre for Public Health Research covers all aspects of public health. Focused research includes non-communicable diseases (respiratory disease, cancer, diabetes), occupational health, environmental health, socio-economic determinants of health, Māori health and Pacific health research.

Riddet Institute

The Riddet Institute is a national Centre of Research Excellence focusing on food structures and digestive physiology.

Roof Water Research Centre

The Roof Water Research Centre generates, integrates and disseminates information through research, education and outreach that address safe and sustainable rainwater-harvesting practices.

SHORE and Whariki Research Centre

The SHORE and Whariki Research Centre is directed by Professor Sally Casswell. The Whariki Research Group is directed by Associate Professor Helen Moewaka Barnes (Ngati Wai, Ngati Hine, Ngati Manu). The SHORE and Whariki Research Centre is funded through external research grants and contracts to undertake public-good research of relevance to the health and social sectors.

Sleep/Wake Research Centre

The Sleep/Wake Research Centre is a multi-disciplinary research team founded in 1998. It has activities in two main areas: the epidemiology of sleep disorders, and occupational health and safety.

Te Pūmanawa Hauora

Te Pūmanawa Hauora, Research Centre for Māori Health and Development has researchers at each of the Albany, Manawatu and Wellington campuses.

Vitamin D Research Centre 

The Vitamin D Research Centre works to improve the status of population groups who are demonstrably at risk of vitamin D deficiency and the associated negative health consequences.
