Prof Glyn Harper PhD, MA, BA, DipTchg

Professor

School of Humanities

I am Professor of War Studies at Massey University in Palmerston North, New Zealand. I was the Director of the Centre for Defence and Security Studies for eight years  and am now Massey Project Manager of the Centenary History of the New Zealand and the First World War. A former secondary school teacher, I joined the Australian Army in 1988 and after eight years transferred to the New Zealand Army, where I reached the rank of lieutenant colonel. I was the New Zealand army’s official historian for the deployment to East Timor and am the author of more than twenty books many which achieved best seller status. Some of these include Kippenberger: An inspired New Zealand Commander; In the Face of the Enemy: the complete history of the Victoria Cross and New Zealand; Dark Journey: Three Key Battles of the Western Front; Images of War: World War One: A Photographic Record of New Zealanders at War 1914-1918 and Letters from Gallipoli: New Zealand Soldiers Write Home. My latest book is The Battles of Monte Cassino: the campaign and its controversies (with John Tonkin-Covell). I have also written several books for young children.

I am Professor of War Studies at Massey University in Palmerston North, New Zealand. I was the Director of the Centre for Defence and Security Studies for eight years.  I am now Massey Project Manager of the Centenary History of the New Zealand and the First World War. This will be a multi-volume, thematic, defining study of New Zealand's role in this far reaching and traumatic conflict. My volume of the history will be published in August 2015.
