Dr Jacqui Horswell

Senior Lecturer

School of Health Sciences

After obtaining my PhD from Aberdeen University,  I moved to New Zealand where I have worked in the area of environmental biology for the past 20 years.

My main interest is sustainable waste management, trying to get waste out of landfills and beneficially re-used, and I’m actively involved in setting national, and regional policy and guidelines in this area.  My research seeks to understand the fate and effects of contaminants in wastes in the environment and how they may impact human and environmental health.

As well as working at Massey as a Senior Lecturer, I also work for an environmental consultancy where I can see research applied to real problems.

I am an environmental microbiologist, and my main research interests relate to sustainable waste management.  I split my time between Massey, an environmental consultancy and providing science policy advice to central Government and have string interest in how science underpins the policy, guidelines and frameworks required to protect human and environmental health.

My research focuses on organic waste (e.g. agricultural and municipal waste) and understanding the fate and effects of chemical and biological contaminants that waste contains.  I am one of New Zealand’s leading experts in microbial contaminants (e.g. pathogens) in waste.
