Massey University celebrates Wellington graduates

Wellington graduates 2018

2018 graduates on the steps of Parliament, Wellington.

More than 700 students will graduate in Wellington this week, with qualifications in subjects ranging from aviation to commercial music, teaching and engineering.

Two ceremonies will be held at the Michael Fowler Centre on Thursday where 775 Massey University students will graduate, including 15 with doctorates and 82 master’s degrees.

This year’s ceremony will mark the first cohort of students graduating with the new Bachelor of Commercial Music degree. The programme, launched in 2016, emphasises new technology, industry engagement and is taught by some of New Zealand’s best musicians, industry professionals and academics.

Graduand Emma Hall-Philipps says she chose to study music at Massey because she found the lecturers passionate and inspiring.

“I found it so rewarding,” Ms Hall-Philipps says. “The teachers all work in the music industry, they know what’s going on, and they helped me network. It’s so hands-on and we were practicing as we were learning.”

Ms Hall-Philipps has recently secured a role as a music event coordinator and like the other hundreds of successful graduates, will celebrate with family and friends on Thursday.

Graduands from both ceremonies will form a procession at Parliament and head to Civic Square at 1pm (weather depending). If the parade is cancelled due to bad weather it will be announced on Massey social media or you may phone (04) 801 5799 ext 63344 between 10am - 12.30pm on the day.

Massey University encourages staff, graduands, family and friends to share their photos with the hashtag #MasseyGrad.
