Communications during an emergency

Following an emergency event follow the Massey University homepage

You can also check our Facebook or Twitter for regular information and updates.

Unless it's absolutley essential, please resist calling the Contact Centre or Campus Helpdesk as this may interfere with critical communications.

Refer to your department, school, college or institute's telephone trees.

Messaging may be sent out by the Emergency Management Team (EMT) via the PING4 app

What is PING4

PING4 is an app that is free for Massey staff and students to download onto their personal and work devices so that during an emergency event they may recieve messages from the EMT.

Emergency Management Team

Manawatu Campus Map

In the case of a significant emergency the Campus Emergency Response Coordinator will authorise the activation of the Emergency Management Team (EMT).

The EMT will then determine whether the Emergency Welfare Centre (located in the Activity Centre at the rear of the Recreation Centre) and the Emergency Volunteer centre (located in The Centre on Colombo Road) are to be activated.

The activation of the Welfare Centre will not negate the responsibilty of individuals to be personally prepared, or the responsibility of Departments, Schools, Colleges, Institutes and Contractors to be prepared.

Emergency Wardens

Where there are 10 or more persons residing in a building Massey University is required to appoint and train Wardens to evacuate a building in the event of a fire.

Due to the nature of the risks and hazards found in a University environment Wardens may br required to evacuate buildings for emergency events other than fires and so to reflect this, Building and Floor Wardens are referred to as Emergency Building Wardens (EBW) and Emergency Floor Wardens (EFW).

Other emergency events that may require Emergency Building Wardens to evacuate a building are weather related events, earthquakes, chemical spills and hazards, utility failure and violence.

Each building on campus has its own unique hazards and for that reason Emergency Building and Floor Wardens are appointed by their own departments.
